Nick and the Ovorols – Live Show Review – August 8, 2015

Rain and thunderstorms may have thinned the overflow herd that usually gathers at The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint in Ocean Springs, MS on a Saturday night, but it certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the three piece blues rockers, Nick and the Ovorols.  On a night when many musicians may have just mailed in a performance, these guys were there to play, and play they did. Nick Peraino howled and growled throughout the blues/rock/funk sets like a man on a mission.  His engaging guitar rides, funky rhythms. blistering slide work, smiles, grimaces of emotion and approving head gestures toward his fellow band mates were displayed with passion throughout the evening.

The trio payed homage to many of the standards and gave everything they played their own twist and flavor, with outstanding musicianship and great dynamics.  There were many notable musical highlights throughout the evening including “Take The V Train” and “Try Me”, but their version of Al Green’s “Love And Happiness” sans keyboard was inspiring, as well as the funky combination of Barry White’s “Ecstacy” and The Allman Brothers “Dreams” (never heard Dreams played quite like that before).  If you like a toe tappin’, head bobbin’, funk drippin’ good time, Nick and the Ovorols should be on you list of live bands to see when they come to your area. Their next stops will be:
  • The Hangout – Gulf Shores, AL – Monday 8/10/15
  • Boshamp’s – Destin, FL – Friday  8/14/15
  • Several dates in Pensacola then up and down the FL panhandle.
