                            [su_custom_gallery source=”media: 3355,3356,3359,3364,3365,3234″ link=”custom” target=”blank” width=”125″ height=”125″]   On This Day… 2012 – President Obama awards Mel Tillis the National Medal of Arts during a ceremony at the White House 2007 – Rod Stewart is paid a million dollars to perform a one hour gig at Ney York’s Park Avenue Armory for billionaire Steve Schwarzman’s 60th birthday bash. 2004 – Led Zeppelin receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.  In attendance were Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham.  Robert Plant was unable to make it due to concert and album commitments. 2002 – Outlaw country singer Waylon Jennings died at his home in Arizona due to a long battle with diabetes. 1988 – Rosanne Cash hits #1 on the Billboard country music chart with a remake of Johnny Cash‘s – Tennessee Flat Top Box 1982 – The marble slab is taken from the grave of Lynyrd Skynyrd singer/front-man Ronnie Van Zant.  Authorities find it two weeks later in a dried up river bed. 1971 – The Osmonds kick off a five week run at #1 with their hit – One Bad Apple 1971 – Sammi Smith takes the Kris Kristofferson penned – Help me Make It Through The Night – to number one on the Billboard country music charts 1970 – Black Sabbath released their debut self titled album in the UK – (June 1, 1970 in the US).  The album is cited as being one of the most influential albums in the development of heavy metal music. 1967 – The Monkees announce that moving forward they would play their own instruments on their recordings and not use session players. 1961 – Frank Sinatra earned the moniker “The Chairman of the Board” when he launches his own label, Reprise Records, in order to allow more artistic freedom for his own recordings.
